A friend of mine invited me to a show on Saturday evening and we decided to go through a bit earlier and have dinner before the show. Spoilt for choice at Monte Casino my friends insisted on making reservations at Gourmet Garage. Admittedly I had heard some talk and my expectations were high by the time we had arrived. (Apparently too high)
Unfortunately I had to settle for dire disappointment from the very start. The lethargic and unfriendly greeting at the door immediately left me at the bottom of a hill, of crushed expectations, to climb within 2 minutes of having arrived at the restaurant.
We were seated in an area where the seats were crammed so close together neither the people at our neighbouring table nor I could move without bumping each other constantly. The service was mediocre at best considering “Friendliness and Enthusiasm” must have been given the night off. The orders were correct and arrived within reasonable time.
Having ordered the burger, the house specialty we were a little underwhelmed. The food looked nothing like the pictures on the web site or on the menu, not even close.
The portions were sufficient and the food was tasty but nothing really sparked my excitement and there wasn’t any attempt at differentiating this restaurant in terms of customer service or quality of the product. There was nothing that promised the premium dining experience that the prices hinted at.
Perhaps there may be a little additional resentment because this place somehow reminds me of my childhood years. I’ve lost count the number of times I must have suffered this phrase, but I believe this may be the first time I will actually use it. For me the Gourmet Garage does not live up to it’s potential. It is an underachiever and can do better.
So fundamentally it is a pass, but really nothing to get overly excited about.
