Summary : Cirque Eloize - iD
Putting a poor start to my evening and a mediocre restaurant experience behind me, I promised myself that I would give the show a fair chance and try my best not to let my bad mood skew my review. Lucky for me I didn’t have to try too hard.
I was transfixed from the first moment the lights went down and was thoroughly drawn into show from the first minute of the first performance. The sets, the music, the lighting and the performances all contributed to a sensational atmosphere. One gets a sense of synergy where the performance is just so much more than all these individual components put together.
The choreography was entertaining and the tricks, stunts, performances, whatever you want to call them, had me on the edge of my seat for most of the show. The occasional touch of humour is a welcome reprise from the tension of the proximity of certain death. Perhaps a bit melodramatic, but so were the days of the roman circus, though I suspect the chances of actual death were marginally higher in the days of the Circus Maximus.
Probably the most amazing jugglers I have ever seen. No flaming chainsaws or razor sharp knives here, just what look like simple tennis balls. But the act was fresh and new with tricks I had never seen before, clever and funny and masterfully executed. I did not notice a single mistake.
The young performers were excellent. They seemed to savour the performance with enthusiasm, maintaining character even when well out of the spotlight. Smiling, cheering, playful and enthusiastic, they made me want to run down and join the fun!
One of these performers had me reaching for my phone before I realised I did not know any exorcists, let alone have one on speed dial. The backwards, upside-down, crawling thing admittedly tugged on some scar tissue left behind from my first viewing of the acclaimed horror movie, but when she started running around here own head she was pioneering a whole new level of psychological scarring.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show and was entertained from the beginning to the very end.
